Historically, load cells used for load monitoring showed a few errors in the measurement of data owing to harsh environmental conditions, the transfer of data from load cells to indicators through wires or cables, and the technical glitches in components. Owing to continuous technological innovations made in load cells, remote monitoring technology development enabled data transmission through Bluetooth and not through physical cables. This development reduced the number of errors caused by disturbances in connecting cables. The errors caused due to harsh environmental conditions have been solved using high-quality IP67 protection, which allows the usage of load cells in a harsh industrial environment. These technological innovations in load cells have reduced instrumental errors and thus increased their demand in various industries. Further, analog load cells need to transmit data passing through an A/D converter, which might lead to errors due to disturbances in the converter. To reduce these errors, various companies have integrated the A/D converter into the load cell.

Restraint: Compliance with various standards

The manufacturers of the load monitoring system have to comply with a number of quality and safety standards. The standards to be followed in end-user industries of load monitoring system are strict, and complying with these standards requires precise manufacturing of load cells. In the healthcare industry, it is mandatory to ensure that the load cell metals do not react with the components of load that is being measured. The casing of load cells needs to be tight, else either liquid materials or minute particles can damage the electronic circuit of the load cell. Further, organizations such as the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) provide certifications to load cell manufacturers. The requirement of various standards and certifications could act as a restraining factor for the growth of the load monitoring system market.

Opportunity: Rise in demand for digital load cells

A digital load cell gives a digital output to be read by load indicators and software. It has an integral A/D convertor. The integral A/D convertor helps in reducing errors caused during external conversion. The application of digital load cells in packaging machines, filling machines, sorting machines, and check weighers, among others, gives accurate, continuous, and fast readings. The output given by the digital load cell is convenient and allows independent communication between load cells and systems. The high level of functionality and accuracy provided by digital load cells have resulted in increased demand in various industries.
